If you seal up the top (where the wires are) with polysulfide caulk, silicone RTV or some such; and seal the two assembly seams at inside top and bottom with extra glue, you'll keep out the two drops of water that are all it takes to make the probe misbehave.

If you further cut open at the top with a tubing cutter, withdraw the circuit board and re-solder the two reed switches so there's some slack in the leads and reassemble the tube (I forget the details here -- I think you need to sleeve it; see my early post that I referenced in the first reply) -- now you'll be able to bend the thing a bit without destroying it.
