The increased additives that are not needed for the Gasoline engine can also help to coat and foul the O2 sensor and catalytic converter. Actually things are not that simple. Thanks to newer Diesels (2007+) having exhaust after treatment and the ultra low sulphur Diesel fuel required for them the newer Diesel oils are getting less ash and zinc as additives and these oils are now also getting listed for Gasoline engines. You want at least SL on the label with SM being the latest spark ignition standard.

While outside temperature has limited effect on oil temp unless the cooling system is stressed, engine speed and load does. For that occasion where extended speed or load pushed the oil system to the limits of maintaining pressure, I want that "50" oil in there to provide any reserve possible, at least for the water boxer. My VW Fox, Audi A8, and Benz 600SEL get the Mobil 1 European formulae, 0w-40.

Hey Dave, 15W40 is truck oil and as such has a much better additive package that the 20W50 car oil you've been using.

If you had an oil pressure gauge, you'd notice that your pressure drops off much less with mileage accumulation than it does with the car oil.

I love Shell Rotella T 15W40 and use it in almost everything...
