I recall a Boston Bob video on the list some time back where he discusses this with Jim Akiba, I believe. I never gave much thought to how important this was until seeing the video. Bob is in a better place now but lives on through the wisdom that he imparted in his archived posts and videos. Rest in Peace Bob til we meet again.

The shims control the end float of the crankshaft. They go on the other side. (Between the flywheel and the crankshaft.) The machining on a flywheel is on the side away from the crank.

As long as it's the same flywheel being mated to the same crankshaft, I would not change a thing. (Which I am doing in the morning.)
