I've learned a bit about "Simple Green." It;s active ingredient is 2-butoxyethanol. EPA and OSHA both are looking at this chemical as a "chemical of concern," because of reported possible carcinogenicity and because it may damage lung and other respiratory epithelia. It is the active ingredient in the crude oil dispersant Corexit that the government is disputing the use of with British Petroleum, and it is the presence of 2-butoxyethanol in the dispersant that is problematic. In laboratory tests, 2-butoxyethanol with crude oil and water had a higher mortality rate for fish larvae than did a mixture of crude oil and water without 2-butoxyethanol. When used as a degreaser in an industrial or commercial setting, the product and rinse should be collected and disposed as toxic material. Seems this very old product may have been greenwashing itself in its promotions since it moved into the retail market.
2-butoxyethanol is present in many other cleaning products on the market, some of them also of longstanding use. Windex is one such product.
The stuff may not be appropriate for use in confined spaces such as in a Vanagon or in a form that will place vapors into air. Protective clothing and respiratory protection may be appropriate when using this purported to be "nontoxic" cleaner.
