I reckon it depends on whether you are using the jumper cables to put a charge into the other car's depleted battery, or using them to actually power the starter. It seems to me that if you are patient, and if the disabled car's battery is good, just depleted, you could hook up 22 gauge zip cord and wait a while for the good battery to slowly charge up the depleted one -- as long as the wire didn't overheat on the initial surge! On the other hand, if you don't have the time or the disabled car's battery is unable to hold a charge, then you need some fat wire.
