Hey Robert, I've been using a Hollywood bike rack that basically hangs off the hatch like that for years now with no issues. Go for it.

I think you're bang on about that 'backpack' working like 'The Bustle' - keep us posted on the mileage increase, everybody's going to want one... ;)
