I suggest the under the radar appraoch ... just go to a DMV in a small town in a state without millions of laws and overwhelming buracracy ... both seller and buyer .. and transfer ownership like it was a normal deal. Sometimes that works just fine.

I know a guy who drove a new Candadian Diesel Eurovan from Canada into Washington state. At the border they didn't pay much attention. At the DMV they were sligtly befuddled at first, but he got it US titled and registered rather easily.

And the diesel aspect ...sometimes there's no smog check on those ...like the old days ...just transfer title and register it.

as for California 'liking diesels' ..I can well believe that a smog refferree said that , but I can't imagine california actually LIKES diesel cars. It's long been my thought they never used to smog check them becuase they would need millions of dollars in personel and equipment to be able to administer that whole project. Though they are doing a basic check on newer diesels now I understand.

and to think, gas was once around 25 cents a gallon. I have worked in gas stations, in LA, in the late 60's where a common fuel order was 'two dollahs regular' .. and you could drive for about 4 or 5 days on that.

Not to go off on a tangent too badly ...., even at 5 dollars a gallon, fuel is an incredible bargain, given what it takes to get it to our fuel tanks. and the Gulf Oil spill is still not under real control... the Earth she's pissed and getting back at us dumb humans ! whoops ..too political ! back to fixin' them vans ! you know who.
