Yep, try the t-stat and be sure to get the correct one, especially if it has
to work in winter weather. If going to a FLAPS, you most likely will get the
wrong one as most parts store books list the same stat as is used in many
Audis. The lower disc is the wrong diameter. The correct stat will not have
bleed holes or bypass and the top disc (poppet) will also have a rubber seal
so that when it is closed there is no bypass or leakage at all.

Drove to Portland after replacing Temp II and O2 senders plus a
coolant bleed. The good news is I have an extremely well-working
cooling system. Too well.
Now runs even cooler than normal (not even out of left warm-up zone!)
and as rich as ever - 11mpg @ 60mph.
Now what should I check or replace? Thermostat stuck open? This Westy
*must* get to Grants Pass and back next week - and not using 90
gallons of gas, either.
