Wouldn't a possible solution be:
* Disconnect the supply, drain tank.
* Disconnect the return from the tank, point hose into a barrel/container
* Repeatedly turn key to on (not start), let fuel pump get rid of stuff in hoses and fuel rails until you're spitting air from the return.
* Reconnect all hoses. Change fuel filter.
* Fill tank, cycle fuel pump again to fill up the system, start engine.
(I'm not sure if running the fuel pump on a "dry" system will do anything at all harmful to the pump or not, so I'll defer to the exerts on that.

You can mix the old gas with new and use it up, no problem. There shouldn't be any crap in the tank, but you never know! Change the filter, let some old crap drain out to get rid of any sediment and water before you install the new filter. I've done this with no problem. Nothing special required.
