I Dear Annie, There's a rather complicated setup to maximize the tank capacity by transferring the headspace to two little plastic tanks in the fender wells. This involves a bunch of vulnerable stuff. If you've got Bentley, look at 20.26. If you haven't got it, do get one even though they're expensive. It will no doubt save you money and trouble even if you don't do your own work. The other major possibility involves the saddle in the tank, originally there for the heating duct in the air-cooled models. Wet leaves and trash can accumulate there and rust through the tank top. VanAgain, Bus Depot, no doubt others sell kits of all the little bits for the venting system. People with small hands and excellent spatial perception have been known to replace this stuff without dropping the tank, but in general that's not realistic. The tank will be much easier to handle and less likely to crush you like a bug if it's about empty -- 16 gallons of fuel weighs about 110 lb. Yours, David |
