do you mean that everything feels normal, and with engine running when you push in the clutch pedal, put it in first, then let the clutch out....the van does not move ?

that's what 'no gears' usually would mean.

on old air-cooled VW's that was common when the splines in a rear drum stripped out ... the axle would just spin in the drum on one side, giving 'no gears' ...as though say, the input shaft to the trans was broken. ( have never seen the splines strip out in a rear axle flange on a vanagon though ) .

your other comment .. "when the motor is not working, the gears seem to engage fine."

That makes me wonder if you mean you can't get the shift lever to move into a gear when the engine is running .. in that case you think about the clutch not releasing ...say pilot bearing is wasted and not allowing clean clutch disengagement, or a clutch hydraulic issue etc.

HI,

I have a vanagon 1983 watercooled that i just put out of winter storage yesterday. I went out for a 60 miles trip and everything was fine.

Today, i tried to go out and all the gears were missing. The clutch seems fine, doesn't seems to have a pressure problem. The fluid level is fine and i haven't seen any leakage. The master cylinder was changed 2 years ago.

However, when the motor is not working, the gears seem to engage fine.

What could be the problem? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Pierre
