If they're tighter going in than coming out, that generally indicates a problem. If the ends are exposed to the weather often the threads will want chasing with a die or thread-chasing file before reinstalling. If they gradually get tighter and tighter that is the sort of thing I'd expect. If they go in easily and suddenly come up hard against a stop, that suggests looking around for missing pieces.
