I've done both. My wife and I were avid backpackers who sneered at "car campers" and did not consider RVers at all. Then I had a heart attack. And then another heart attack. And then my wife had cancer and ended up disabled. So we stopped backpacking. But we missed backpacking and particularly camping. So I bought an RV and we tried "camping" in an RV. If you stay away from "RV parks" and go to smaller places - state parks, national forest, etc - it beats nothing, but it isn't camping - more like cabining.

But, as someone pointed out, we spent most of our time inside of the RV which sorta missed the point of camping. Back when we backpacked we drove our VW van, first a splitty then a loaf, to the trial head. Soooo I bought a syncro and now we camp out of it. Because of our various health problems we don't deal with heat so well and I'm one of those guys who has a "hillbilly" window a/c. When it's really hot in the day time we sleep a lot, read, watch movies, play cards, etc. from inside our cool little box. We always cook outside and spend the evenings outside but we sleep in a/c comfort. This means that we go to places with hookups or we go to places so isolated that no one can hear our honda generator.

I remain, as always YrLyl&ObdntSrvnt,
