Gee, I wasn't trying to start a battle, you asked an interesting question, I tried to find an answer. . Look at the page with the 46mm x 3/4, http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00974467000P?keyword=46mm+socket&pr it clearly shows a 17mm in the (stock) photo. I simply extrapolated this info over to the 46mm x 1" page. Looks about 17ish to me, and it's clearly sitting in the same orientation(lettering direction). Seems to me a more sensible answer than the socket having a hex drive. You asked if you were missing something, I just pointed it out. Have a great evening.
