poor ground connections pop to mind. there's a notorious one ... a 'crown' thing ...above the fuse box and to the left, way up in there. Has about 8 to 10 push on spade connectors, all with brown ground wires on them.

they are commonly corroded and weak from age and heat.

also the contact at the main instrument cluster connector, T14 in the wiring diagrams.

- might get you started on fixing it.
