that makes sense.
then your clutch is not disengaging cleanly ...
and it's either external or internal to the bell housing...
external...you think clutch hydraulics usually,
internally, you think pilot bearing maybe ..
see if the lever under the clutch slave cylinder appears to be moving with a
good amount of travel ..
a good inch at the end of the lever, when someone steps on the clutch pedal.
as a place to start.

Sorry, i didn't make myself clear.
In fact, as you said it's more like i can't get the shift lever to move
into the gear when the
engine is running.
I was able to get back in first by stopping the car, put the shift in 1st
and start back the engine and i manage to get home.
