I've had occasion to talk to several different gasoline tank truckers
(because they interrupt me when I'm working), and they've all basically told
me that gas is gas is gas... _except_ for Chevron, and some of the other
"premium" brands with the additives. They would fill the truck and drive
from ARCO to Fastrip to whatever with the same load, but with something like
Chevron they would put the additive package in the tank, fill it with the
base gas and go from Chevron to Chevron.
That makes me think that getting your gas at ARCO and adding Techron to it
is more-or-less the same as buying Chevron, with the possible exception of
Chevron taking better care of their pumps/tanks/filters etc.

I too have tracked better performance (in gas mileage, as well as
seat-of-the-pants data) from Chevron, but I don't like paying the 10-15
cents/gallon premium around here. I figured it out once and using the bottle
of Techron off the shelf worked out to about the same cost as buying the
Chevron out of the pump, so there was no real point.

Around home I get my gas at a grocery store (which is also my main
customer); it seems to do as well as any. On the highway I'll generally
switch to Chevron, especially once I get out of Cali and the relative price
is better. It's still higher than everywhere else, but it's cheaper than
what I'm used to paying so I can stomach it more easily. : )

As for elevation, we're over 2000' and all of the gas here (as well as north
and west into higher elevations) is 87. I was in Durango in September almost
4(3?) years ago and I swear I think the gas I got there was 87, which I
remember thinking at the time was very strange.
