Way back when I lived in Alaska - in the 1980's my cousin lived in Anchorage and worked for Shell Oil. He told - and showed me - that all the Gasoline sold in Anchorage and the surrounding area came from a single cracking plant - the Tesoro plant down on the Kenai Peninsula some 110 miles away in a straight line. The fuel was pumped through a pipeline to a distribution point on a tank farm in Anchorage, and then distributed to the various Brand Name oil companies. That fuel was all the same - no matter the name of the oil company - Tesoro, Shell, Gulf, Exxon, Mapco - all got the same fuel. The difference was in the additives added by each oil company to the fuel to make it their own.Diesel, High Test, Low Test, Aviation Fuel - all was pumped through that pipeline to Anchorage for distribution. After each fuel delivery of a particular type - the pipe was purged with air, then purged with a wash of the next fuel type. This wash was considered waste fuel as it would be a mix with what comae before and was about 150-200 gallons.. Legally, it could not be used, since it was not pure. Aviation fuels - 100 Octane, and 80-87 octane - were pumped in succession, but the fuels when mixed were considered not saleble - but my airplane would run on either fuel or a blend of both - so instead of the fuel being wasted - my cuz would barrel up the 100/80/87 mix and we would go on a fly-in fishing trip.
