Primary cause of "bad gas" is an inch or three of water in the bottom of the delivery tank. Happened to a Cucumber Farms store/station near me once, they had people mad at them from all over the place. Prudent owners smear some stuff on the sounding stick that turns color if there's water at the bottom. Of course with the 10% ethanol mix they give us around here, a considerable amount of water can be taken up by the alcohol and not have the same drastic effects.
