Many people carry gear attached to the outside of their Vanagon -- awnings, luggage in the Westy rack or on roof racks, tires, high-lift jacks, maybe even those cantilevered racks the fit a hitch receiver. Personally I think it's not a bad thing to be reminded that improperly secured outside gear presents a hazard to others as well as the vehicle operators (as in the sad case in Canada).

Are you perhaps being a trifle oversensitive?
