Don't know how the vehicular statutes actually read, but I've driven various vehicles with spotlights mounted, over the years, and I have never had them mentioned or been chastised by law enforcement for that particular item. I see em on plenty of vehicles in the rural areas where I hang out. You might get a citation if you had one on your Smart Car in downtown SF or somewhere...

I have one (bought it new, a Unity) on my current non-westie, mounted front and center on the roof with the handle coming inside just behind the review mirror. I wired it to my auxilliary battery so I can use it at night when camping or for night time repairs, or when I bivouac. Mounted there, I can (and do, quite often) use it while driving on the highway to look for side roads and check possible campsites without having to turn the whole van. (that use is probably illegal) It's good light also, when backing down a forest road in the dark.. It is very helpful to be able to direct a beam onto the area where you may be headed as you drive but before you commit.

They are really bright. and use a big wire..
