Hey Wes,
Just a note on the Bing maps, if you zoom in a bit you can drag your route
around the map making it really easy to build trip direction information to
the places you want to go.

Thanks for all of the replies!!
We're aware of the safety issues, and plan on not spending any time in
border cities at all. We plan to cross in the morning, and drive a long day
south the first day. Frank's tip on the rural border crossing sounds good.
My original thought was to cross somewhere big enough that we would be close
to the highway and be making good time going south right away. But this
rural option sounds like it might be more hassle-free?
The bing link I posted still works for me (google maps doesn't seem to do
mexico directions, unfortunately) but for those trying to get what I was
looking at, I just typed in from: new york, ny to: progreso, mexico and
haven't played around with the route yet at all past that.
Speaking of which, does anyone have recommendations for a good (or less bad)
road atlas for Mexico? Or a book with good advice about which roads might
be good to take, from a safety/convenience perspective?
Thanks again,
Wes
