Directional radials (like those with a "V" shaped tread, as popularized
with the Goodyear Gatorbacks) must be rotated back to front. Same with
older bias plys. It may be that the recommendation is based on the
required higher load range commercial (or reinforced) tires often being
bias ply at the time it was written.
