back in the day..... end play was checked without dial guages.

check out a copy of The Idiot's Guide ... the famous John Muir air-cooled VW book. brilliant book. it is so brilliant that it is worhty of study regardless of subject or ones interest in VW air-cooled engines. like if you never even *saw* a car in your life, you could fix your old bug with that book. and the illustrations ...like a drawing of an exploded engine ... those are technically accurate, with hundreds of pieces shown....even the valve spring keepers , each one .

in that book , pretty sure, they show you how to check end play with feeler gauges... I have a couple of copies, I should check to make sure.

and you do need some extra end-play shims to fanagle the end play if it needs it.

I should be getting some of those little metal rings to retain the felt dust seal for the pilot bearing .. they're on the way to me now. anohter very, very good method on that one though .. is to use the diesel vanagon pilot bearing ..( with built-in rubber lip type seal ) and the only trick needed is to have a machine shop remove a little material from the center of the flywheel on the crankshaft side, as the DV pilot bearing sticks out a smidge., I hear.

I have one waterboxer flywheel that has the center hole larger than normal.. like the metal rinig that holds the dust seal would not fit, I bet it will be perfect , that flywheel, with a DV pilot bearing.

the only thing I would add to that video is to dampen or soak the felt seal in oil .. think I read that somewhere, and 'dry' doesn't sound right to me. and after all....all seals get lubed some on assembly, so they don't run dry at first .. and with trans in gear, engine running, clutch pedal in .. there is rotation gong on there, on that seal, speaking in terms of relative speed. .......I soak 'em in a oil a little.

did you say 'oy' ...? .. as in oy vey, however you spell that ? I have some strange affinity for Yiddish words. such a smageggie I am at times .
