Regarding the van you are looking at: The miles seem nice and low (we bought our Weekender with 100K more than the one you are looking at, but it seemed like it must have went cross-country a lot b/c the interior wasn't too bad). The body looked straight and I guess it's not rotting out like so many east coast vanagons. Like you said, the pool of available Vanagons in the east is way smaller than the west.

You have been around the block enough with VWs to know if this is a manageable project for you. We paid about that for our 86 and got two years of use, local camping and one 1000 mile trip to Montana and back (to Seattle) before deciding to do the engine/tranny thing.
