You want a *Real Adventure* in propane? You should try going to the Gas
Central in La Paz, BCS, Mexico...
Wow! Propane is the fuel of choice for cooking in Baja and it's not given
the 'US lawyer's' regulation-treatment there. So you pull up to a busy
loading dock, about 10 guys on a raised platform full of pipes and valves,
about 10meters by ten meters.....or if you have the built-in under your van
tank, you get in line with a bunch of Gringos with trailers and motorhomes.
You watch all kinds of rusty big tanks and bottles emerge from various
pickups, 54 Chevys, mazda trunks, Beetle back seats, etc. They get tossed
up onto this big high platform where the men are filling and you watch em
try to find an adaptor for that particular type filler...then they fill and
stick the thing on a scale like you saw in the Ice House and toss it back to
you..or roll it off the dock into the pickup or the trunk of the passenger
vehicle...".Clang! Bang! Gracias, Amigo!" The houseflys find the smell of
Propane (or Gas, as it is called in Spanish) very attractive, so the whole
gas works is crawling and buzzing with them...The gal who takes the money in
the office, she is a trip! Silver fingernails and Gold rim
sunglasses...bright red hair and lips...no eye contact at all, ever.
Vanagon content? All along Baja Highway 1 are burned-out Vanagon
bodies...about every 50kms or so there is a rusty old shell...Guess they
don't have a Vanagon list to warn them to "Change your fuel lines"...
