hi,
that's not the part on 1.9 waterboxer vanagons commonly called the H Pipe..
that's on the coolant pressure bottle.
this part can stil be used 'sort of' ...they commonly break off that bleed
hose nipple..
when that happens, which happens REAL easily ...
you can do what someone has done to this part in the photo ....cut back some
plastic so you can get the small bleed hose to stay on there again. I have
about 5 broken ones just like this.
it goes in the main coolant hoses at the firewall.
Looks to me like the way it works is when you open the bleed valve there,
any air in the main coolant pipe gets routed back to the heater circuit,
then to pressure bottle where the air gets separated out.
there are two version of this part,.one for manual transmissions,
and one for auto trans where there are fittings to go to the auto trans
cooler.
On my personal 85 Adventurewagon with 2.1 wbxr engine, but still running
1.9 cooling system ...
I have 2.1 exhaust , which means there's room for an oil cooler at the oil
filter per 2.1 arrangement ...
which I've already installed...next is to plumb it with the auto trans
version of this part, so I have a 1.9 cooling system with oil cooler.
...actually ..........oil warmer/cooler heat exchanger ..
but that old plastic you know ..loves to break.
there is a billet aluminum version of this part at Van Cafe I believe,
around 175 bucks or so.

I was just going to eBay this H Pipe
http://www.feddishbasses.com/vw/hpipe.html when I noticed it looks like
something is broken off. My van does not have an H pipe (it's all 1 big hose
assembly) so I cannot compare as to what it's supposed to look like. Is this
thing junk?
Thanks,
Bryan
