FWIW, I can activate my brake lights with moderate-to-firm forefinger
pressure (engine running) and firm thumb pressure (engine
off).  That's on an '89 2.1l.  Haven't tried it driving, but it
doesn't seem to me that there would be much if any braking effect at
that point.
