If your van has an idle stabilizer module it *must* be disconnected as above, because it actively alters the timing at idle speeds. You will see this with the timing light -- the timing will be jumping all around.

Leaving the vacuum hoses connected is consistent with the method for Digijet (1.9l).

As a rule the stickers actually on the vehicle ought to be pretty reliable. So I would follow them and also bypass the idle stab unit.

Bear in mind that I've actually seen an air-cooled engine, once, for several seconds...
