Subject: Muffler replacement for cheap!!
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed; delsp=yes
I replaced the muffler on the 87 and it took about 1/2 an hour tops.I
got all of the parts at Advance Auto for a total cost of $43. First I
cut the muffler off at the body leaving as much of the pipe(attached
to the flange) as possible. I used an adapter for 1 1/4 inch id to 2
inch and used a muffler clamp to attach that to the pipe left attached
to the flange, Then I slid the muffler on-- part # 18595 (sound
solution 5 1/2 round muffler) clamped that to the adapter already on
the pipe and added an elbow pipe and clamped that on.
This fits right in and uses the stock straps so no modification is
necessary and other than the exhaust clamps looks like it belongs..
Works great, took very little time to install and best of all was way
way under the $200 for a muffler "kit".
I had already decided that if I needed the gaskets at the flanges I
would simply cut off the bolts ( all three of them) rather than waste
time trying to unbolt rusty exhaust bolts and replace the gaskets with
ones from the bus depot (I believe they are like $2 each) and just put
new bolts on but new gaskets werent necessary so I will save that job
for later.
Just thought I would throw that out there!!
Happy Fourth.
A J
