Scott, I have an 84 Westy. Dave said a few days ago that my battery
cover screws are not stock because they are too long. I've been sulking
ever since. I want to see whether this can be true!
What I have here are four flat head machine screws, about 18mm length
overall, 3.68mm major diameter -- which makes them M4 size, I believe. I
can't tell the pitch, the metric tap and die set I inherited from my
father doesn't appear to have a die that screw is happy with.
The screws go into threaded inserts, these are not sheet-metal
thread-cutting or thread-rolling screws.
Stock, or not?
The cover over the battery compartment is quite sturdy. I can't picture
any way it could be mashed down by a normal human. Unlike the flimsy
little hinged cover that goes over the compartment under the driver's
seat. Is that what people are finding over their non-Westy passenger
seat-side compartments?
