I don't have access to the threads I've saved right now, but there is a lot of discussion about older, "flat tappet" engines needing the additive packages that are being phased out in favor of ones which are designed to allow catalytic converters to last longer. Do some Googling on "ZDDP vw flat tappet" and you'll have some reading for a while.
