If your bar is bent, it can easily be straightened by pushing on it when in the upright position- 3/4" thick shelf will straighten it out even more once you can fasten the U bolts & tighten them down-don't know if a 1/2" shelf is rigid enough, however.

I have only seen this 1 other time & I believe the bar was bent from having heavy loads on top the poptop like boats, rocket box, etc. & the force on the bar required to raise the top w/ such loads.
