That sounds as though the rears are wearing awfully fast. But if the pedal is good, my purely personal and highly non-expert opinion is that you ought to be able to get away with taking up on the adjustment nut at the equalizing saddle. If the beast has spent any time in Scotland expect to need lots of penetrating oil and maybe some serious attention to the threads on the adjusting rod. Seems to me back in the day I got away with electric drill and wirebrush, but now I'd probably chase it with a die, assuming it's the same M6 thread that's used all over the vehicle.

Yours, David ps -- everything they say about the '85+ actuating handle is true. Night and day. And no seam at the bottom to dig in to your fingers (we wrapped it with silicone tape, but still...).
