You're absolutely right Scott, there is a lot of satisfaction in doing it yourself, knowing it was done right. And over the years things have gotten cheaper as I now own just about every tool out there, although I did have to buy the Helicoil kit this time. And while my wife would nominate me for the TV show "Hoarders" when it comes to auto parts, I had to point out to her that there were a lot of parts I have used so far on this Vanagon that were already in my parts stash from previous Vanagons I've owned. And the smell? Well I like your comment, its the smell of saved money-my wife said its the smell of insanity! Jeff

yeah but when you do it yourself..
you know what you have, and you alone are responsible that it's done right
..
at least you have control that way.
not that 'everyone' should do all their own work on their vanagon of course.
it's fun to get in there and really root around and get dirty ..
or more accurately, to wear tough clothes so you don't have to worry about
getting dirty.
and as you organize and clean on the van , jobs get less messy ..
and the more you do it the better you get at it, until only your hands get a
little dirty.
always put that 'glove' cream on ....barrier cream, keeps the grease out of
the skin pores, very easy to get hands cleaned after the work is done if you
use that stuff.
tell wifey that's the smell of saved money !
