John, let me give you my standard conjure mojo which has unlocked many a back hatch over the years—but not all of them.

Go the the back and lock and then unlock the hatch manually, with a key. Don't try to open it. Now go to the side door and unlock it. You should hear a click from the hatch lock. If it doesn't work, repeat a few times.

If this doesn't work you will have to pull off the upholstered panel from the inside and open it by manually moving whatever you find under there.
