David, I do the 180 degree turnaround all the time on the passenger seat of my 85 Vanagon, with standard issue blue carpeting on the battery box.  No problems....takes about 45 seconds alltogther to slide out, turn, slide in.  I DO make it a practice to un-recline the seat back so it's sticking nearly straight up; it just BARELY clears the dash this way and engages the seat tracks just fine.

I tried that last weekend at West River, and I couldn't compress the carpet enough to let the seat engage the tracks ('89 White Star).  Does yours have carpeting on the battery box, and has this been a problem?
