Air Flow Meters are a weak link anyway, in an ideal world we'd put a new OE genuine VW german one on every 5 years.. what is the symptom ? if find them causing uneven running, and hiccupping.. but they won't keep it from starting up. not sure on an air-cooled, but a waterboxer will start just fine without the AFM even on the van... won't rev out ..but will start and run. what is the symptom you are trying to fix ?
