Subject: Carat - Funky Rear Hatch Lock Operation
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

OK - I finally figured out how to open the rear hatch, after closing it and it refusing to open again. Turned out to be "Operator Error"! It really helps to fully understand the book on how the electric locks work, particularly the rear hatch lock, because it has TWO locking positions.

1) When the hatch is closed with the key slot in the vertical position the lock cannot be opened with the electrical actuator. It must be re-opened with the key by turning 45 degrees or so to the right, then pushing the button in.

2) When the hatched is closed with the key slot horizontal, the latch will actuate with the up and down movement of the driver side door lock button. Push it down, all locks including rear hatch lock will latch/lock. Lift it up - all door locks including the hatch lock - will release. Under this condition, one can still can get out of the van and raise the rear hatch by simply pressing the hatch lock button in until it clicks on release.

If the vehicle has been locked from the outside at the driver door with the key, then the rear hatch lock will be engaged

Keep in mind however, that if the rear hatch is slammed shut with the key slot vertical, the electrical actuator will not work. Only the key in the slot will release the mechanism.
