  I have a Dennis Haynes receiver hitch on my rig. Very stout. Bolts to
the frame of the van, not to the tow loops. A little involved to
install, but you can't get better. You must remove the rear bumper,
mount the bumper to the hitch, then install the hitch with the bumper
mounted to it. There are three heavy duty bolts on each side of the
hitch that mount it to the frame. Best hitch I know of for a Vanagon.
The hitch provides some protection from a rear-ender. Drop Dennis a
note. He still makes these. He's on the list.
