If you're talking about their neat in-bumper receiver hitch, they say it's really a class-III hitch but they only rate it for 100/1000 lb because that's all they think a Vanagon should tow.

What VW says in the manual ('87 is the one I happen to be using) is 75 kg (165#) tongue, 600 kg (1320#) unbraked trailer, 900 kg (2,000#) braked trailer maximum.

Probably none of this is news to you...
