I made the lid of the box so that it fits into the top of the box without any hinges and it has a 'rim' around the top to keep stuff on the box...with the rim and some of that shelf liner rubber type mat that box is either a seat or a place to stash stuff, on the box, while traveling. I often have a cooler sitting on that. I also sized the box to fit under my Z-bed and give that some support when the bed is deployed...My SO is disposed to "plunk down" rather forcefully on the edge of the bed...I put a couple of hand holes in the ends of the box so you can easily lift it around. The lid comes completely off and the pot lifts right out...I have room for my TP, some deodorizer, the doggie leashes and my bike locks inside... I used 3/4" birch ply for the top and some 3/8 baltic birch for the box itself..hardwood on the top and bottom to take the hits from other cargo and I rounded the edges to save human and canine tissues from damage.. http://picasaweb.google.com/dhanson928/VanagonMods#5494928642993584818 Not a very detailed pic..but it's not a complicated box either.
