No experience, but if it were me....

I'd build a box with 3 sides, top, and 2x4 brace between sides and top
at opening. That way it's slide-able. Maybe put a handle on front too.
Not the best ASCII drawing but should show what I mean:

I would think that with 2x4 brace, it would handle most peoples weight
if used as step stool.
