Speaking of SF, I had friends in that town who drove with a bad starter for years. They had to remember to always park pointing downhill.

oh Tom, it's more fun to drive them until they just won't move another foot forward under their own power.

I can top your brake story though, my daughter's mother drove metal-to-metal on front brakes ( Renault 16 ...fantastic car actually ) until.. the brake caliper and hose caught on fire ! single worst case I have ever seen .. one of the brake pads was actually fused ..........fused into one lump of metal ... to a caliper piston.

In San Francisco where the steep hills are very rough on brakes and clutches .. I've see a disc worn though until it was a loose, unattached shiny ring of metal rattling around in there. *That* is getting your money's worth out of the brakes !!
