5mm ID is the correct hose. Never have had a problem with it. I replaced mine in '97 on the Westy and they're still supple, no cracks, etc. VW Part # N 020 355 1, same as the fuel hose used on carbed Bugs & Buses.

You could prolly get away with 7mm ID, but be sure the clamps are tight to prevent leakage.
