hi .. wd-40 would work, but it's not my preferred for this application.

I like to jack up the left front wheel, get the upper end of the speedo cable in my hands, then turn the tire with my foot while I shoot high quality spray lube into the rotating speedo cable.

a super good one is .. LPS ....green can , at hardware stores, almost 10 bucks, but really good stuff.

and there are MANY really good spray lubes around .. I haven't found a bad one even. I am sure there must be super cheap ones that aren't so great.. but I try all the ones I can . they are all really good .. moisture displacing, the right amount of sticky etc. I probably spray something on vanagons 20 times every day with good spray lubes.

and that should fix your jumping cable.. and always do it sooner rather than later .. the sound of squeaking between metal.. is the sound of metal molecules getting sheared off.. you hear a squeaking door hinge...that's what you are hearing ..one metal surface sheering off molecules on the other surface.. the whole idea of lubricants is to keep the two parts from actually touching each other.

if things stayed lubed well enough .. they almost would not wear at all.

and lately, I am thinking that take ...transmission oil... it 'goes off' after a while. my wild guesstimate is that after 10,000 miles it has lost 20 % of the wonderful properties it started out with. it's all about the fluids baby, all about the fluids.

if the fluids were really, REALLY kept up , like fresh all the time, things would not wear basically at all.

you can use a fine oil like 3-in-one on a speedo cable.. but I like the spray lubes the best. might as well hit those hinges and latches on the driver's door while your there. so sad to see those get trashed when it's so unnecessary.

and a really nicely well lubed sliding door .. including the mechanisms inside the door .. man is one of those nice to experience !
