I'm pretty proud of myself. I've been making slow, but steady headway on
most of Zeno's impressive list of projects. Some of you will probably laugh
at me, but I've never changed out a stereo on a car before. When I bought
Zeno last November the vanagon came with an aftermarket JVC that was super
craptacular. That may be an understatement. I promptly pulled it from the
dash, three of the four kenwood speakers had holes in them. They came out
too. In addition to that pile of woe, the previous owner had used speaker
wire in several locations where he wanted to add electric locks and a very
keen alarm system (it kept me on my toes by tripping any old time it felt
like I needed a super loud alarm). I'm confident that 99% of that is no
longer resident in Zeno.
Yesterday I purchased a replacement stereo with feature I believe I'll
enjoy. In addition I got two 4" and two 6" speakers to replace the blown
set that came with the van. The speakers are installed, I haven't tested
them yet, but I may hook the leads up to an old shortwave to make sure
they're all working correctly later this afternoon. My next major challenge
is to install the wiring harness that came with the deck.
Here's what I'm working with. The below is a photo of the wiring harness
and the wiring installation diagram. I've added notes the harness photo so
mouse over and you should be able to skip the second photo.

The next image is a picture of Zeno's dashboard with all the car's wiring
leads sticking out the stereo deck whole. Again I've added notes to the
leads although what they should be used I need some help with.

First, notice the pair (red/red-white) that are taped together on the left
hand side of the aperture. When I un-installed the old harness this pair
was twisted together with *one* wire from the old harness. I believe that
these are a hot lead to something (not sure what) and that the second
(probably red-white) wire carries power to something else in series further
off on the right hand side of the dash.
Second, the big red 14 ga wire looks like a power lead as well. Not sure
what I should connect it to either.
Third, the blue wire I believe is the antenna power-life lead. I'm actually
planning on removing the power antenna at some point (maybe later today),
but it would be nice to know what this should be used for.
Finally, I believe that the brown wire is the body ground. I'd appreciate
it if someone who knows can confirm my suspicion.
Maybe I just don't understand what I'm looking at in Bentley, but after
peering at the pages and wondering all morning I'm getting fed up. I want
me some tunes! Your knowledgeable assistance would be greatly appreciated.
