One mistake I made in fiddling with levers and control cables during my engine swap, was to put the cable back in the wrong hole on one of the levers. The angles were such that eventually the cable bent at lever.

I would suggest that it's not beyond the scope of the well meaning owner to have done this and is worth checking.
