Those are "if not broken don't fix thems".If loose, they snap into a recess in the wheel-well.   They are part of the EVAP and leak preventers in case of a accident. Each have gravity valves that close when the car is upside -down.   They prevent fuel from the gas tank from leaking out from the vapor tanks(Diesel only), and from fuel exiting the vehicle via the charcoal canister gas models only).   Robert 1982 Westfalia

sorry i've just been a Westy, sorry again, Vanagon owner since like May - but back to the question - Those plastic things - are they just held in there by the one screw that I can see from under?  Because i don't want to pull on it and break something - they seem to becoming loose the more i play with - but i'll wait until i hear from the masters - THANKS!   Steve Todey
