The Tristars came with an AAP model transmission. There are other 5-Speeds. They are harder to shift as you have to "Z" to get from 1st to 2nd (left and down to forward along the left side of an "H" pattern for 2nd, 3rd,4th,5th.
A mechanic at a shop I take it to sometimes can't find reverse. I'm used to it and have no problems at all.
I think the AAP works very well with my stock 2.1, and I can do 75MPH no problem, though I usually drive 55MPH just to get in people's way. I like the attention ; )

A lot of the European T3’s came with 5 speeds. Diesel, Turbo Diesel, or Gas, only thing different was the gearing.
Believe it or not, my Tristar came stock with a clock instead of an RPM gauge.

It was my understanding that the european 5-speeds are just a low gear for diesel... no? They have a tall 5th? So what's your revs at 70mph in 5th? On my manual 4-speed that's 4K.

I disagree.
All Vanagons should have come with a 5 speed (as most European models did).
Once I got used to the shift pattern, the 5 speed in my Tristar (stock 2.1l)
quickly became my tranny o' choice. I love the ability to shift down to 4th
gear at 60-65 MPH. The ratios and spread between the gears are much more
drivable than the US 4 speeds.

Jeff

Add another zero to the rebuilt units price.
Many are finding out the 5 speed isn't all it is cracked up to be. A
regeared 4 speed is a better option for most applications.

There is one used one for $350.00 in GA (okay I'll bite-whats the catch?)
and another rebuilt one in the box for a make offer/I need money price. Very
tempting.
